The Amblers are a folksy, Blues Rock duo hailing from the vibrant and diverse music industry in South Africa. The two have a broad range of both local and international musical influences from Southern Gypsy Queen and The Black Cat Bones, to The Rolling Stones and Jack White. Their approach to music is raw but not unpolished, lending an authentic energy to huge drums and dirty, vintage guitar tones. Acclaimed drummer Jason Hinch provides an accomplished and powerful framework for Justin Swart to deliver his raconteurish ideas of music and lyrics to a listener.

With that said, we had a chat with Justin from The Amblers…

Hi there. Thanks for your time to have a quick chat. How excited are you on releasing your second album?

Hey. Yeah, we are really excited! We obviously really hope that people enjoy it and that it gets people going in the same way “The Dustling Man” did. We really love making music, and we hope this love has translated onto the recording.

What can the people expect from Ratty Old Mo’?

The drums are pretty huge. We tracked in a 150 square metre studio on an SSL Duality. Loads of fun! I think the drums really reflect the size of the space. The guitars are still real and gritty. Loads of tone. As with “The Dustling Man”, the entire album consists only of single takes. So that’s quite a thing. We love doing that. We hope that the recording of our music with always reflect a moment in our lives. Producing music this way can have its drawbacks, but we connect better with our own music this way. It feels authentic to us. Gives us an idea of where we are at as musicians.

What makes you excited to be releasing new music into the world?

Putting new material out there is exciting for so many reasons. Those reasons depend on what your definition of success is. For me, in this moment it’s about the creative process and relationships. We had loads of fun doing it! We’ve worked hard at getting better as musicians and releasing new music helps as gauge that process. Not necessarily with regard to commercial success only. “Ratty Old Mo’” is a great album, we loved making it and we can hear the growth. That’s exciting for us.

How did Ratty Old Mo’ come together? Take us through the writing, recording, and inspiration on the new album?

After the release of “The Dustling Man” we wanted to get right back in there. And we did. We had songs in the pipeline, we always do. Our approach may be a little different in putting an album together than others, in that we don’t have a song selection process regarding which songs make it onto the album. We record the songs we have. Its all the same to us, and we thoroughly enjoy the simplicity of our process. There is no single source of inspiration. We love making music together and that’s what we do, we try our best not to overcomplicate this process for ourselves, or to allow fears to impede us.

Do you have any advice for upcoming artists who also want to release their music to the world?

Work hard and get better at your craft. Don’t wait for the “silver spoon” or “big break”! Being successful as a musician for its own sake can really diminish your creative process and steal every bit of goodness from it for you. Have fun, be disciplined and WORK your ass off! Just because you are talented doesn’t mean you deserve a free ride. Also, where is the fun in that? Its all about the songs! Not the production process or gear! The songs! Before you do anything else, write great songs!

How can people get hold of The Amblers for news on upcoming shows and such?

The most convenient and inclusive place to connect with us is on social media. Anything new or relevant will be available there.

After the release of the album, what is next for The Amblers?

We plan on releasing more music in 2019, but the main focus for the next while will be hitting the road and getting to our fans in person!
