Here’s one of the greatest (if not the greatest) songs ever written by a South African band (or any band for that matter): Fokofpolisiekar – Ek Skyn (Heilig).

The song was originally released way back in 2006 and has been incorporated into every local playlist since its release. Ek Skyn (Heilig) is a beautifully intricate masterpiece written and performed by Fokofpolisiekar. They treat us to the song at every show, and I can honestly say that I will never EVER get sick of it.

Fokofpolisiekar

The reason Ek Skyn (Heilig) is my song of the day is because I witnessed the effect it had at Oppikoppi Odyssey. I personally saw the song uniting a diverse group of people: brothers and sisters, arm in arm, their vocals trying to outdo one another, resonating alongside Francois‘s voice. It may be from a car’s speaker, but it felt like the band was there. Myself and every single person next to me had goosebumps the entire time. It was a fucking beautiful sight to behold. I have goosebumps even as I type this with that memory in my mind. I will treasure it always. Thank you, Fokofpolisiekar.

Listen to the song, hit repeat, and listen to it again. Appreciate one of the greatest bands of all time!

“Te vinnig te veel
ek sal al my beloftes breek
as jy my net ‘n kans kan gee
wie sal vir my liefde maak
wie sal vir my liefde maak
as die somer so lekker is
hoekom voel ek so fukt
ek skyn
ek skyn heilig
onder die straatlig
onder die maanlig
sê vir my as die rewolusie verby is
geliefdes ons weet
‘n hond sal altyd na sy braaksel toe terugkeer
moenie so verbaas wees nie
gooi net ‘n bietjie vet op die vuur
twissiek en melankolies
ek skyn
ek skyn heilig
onder die straatlig
onder die maanlig
sê vir my as die rewolusie verby is
ek bly verveeld
en my bene is seer
ek staan voor jou deur
en my kop klop
genade onbeskryflik groot
ek is die hel in
bibber en beef die boerebedrieër
die wêreld sal jou haat my seun
as jy die waarheid praat
gaan hulle jou wil doodmaak”
