With that said, I had a quick chat with Schalk ahead of his performance at Park Acoustics…

Hi there. You’ve been on the Park Acoustics Comedy stage a few times now. What makes each set different for you?

I don’t do Park Acoustics often, so every time I do it a lot of time has passed since the last one. Every time there has been a lot of new experiences and thus a lot of new material.

You were recently nominated by the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) for best actor for the feature film, Kanarie. Firstly congratulations! Is it harder work to be an actor than a comedian? And which one do you prefer the most?

Both are equally hard work. I guess comedy looks easier and like more fun because there are always drinks involved and it’s very social. But there are many nights of testing material and dying on stage. With regards to acting it is always hard to convince an audience that you are someone else. No matter what role it is.

As a person who loves sweaters, I always find yours fantastic! Where do you get them?

Hospice and grannies who love me.

Which show that you’ve done do you feel was your most successful one and why?

If the audience laughed, the show was successful. It’s as simple as that.

What do you love most about your profession? And what do you hate the most?

I love the laughs. I hate the silences.

Lastly, do you have any advice for people who aren’t funny but wish to be?

There is no advice to give, really. If you’re not funny, you’re not funny. Just like if you’re not fast, you’re not fast. All the training in the world couldn’t make you fast if you just naturally aren’t. The same with funny.
