This weekend my lady and I went to Plushy Fest at Wolmer Bush Lounge to take in what the South African music scene had to offer. After a few beers and chatting to Heine van der Walt (Wolmer Bush Lounge Head Honcho and energy-overflowing lead singer of Boargazm) about skateboarding, WitchFest and zombies, we were treated to one of the most underrated bands in the South African music scene – Satanic Dagga Orgy.

I was a bit skeptical about the band (I think it might be the name) and didn’t know what to expect as I only heard about the band, never actually hearing a song. As soon as the duo (apparently there are more members, but they were in Slaapstad at the time) started, my gurrrrrlllfriend and I were captivated by Pete and Jeremy on stage. The Basket Case cover was fucking hilarious (the song actually wanted me to drink – so off to the bar I went between every tune they treated us to) and had our undivided attention. I also digged ‘Hate City’, and not to mention the last song of the set – ‘Aweh Lucifer’. The crowd was a little small, but intimate; that’s what orgies are all about – intimacy!

Satanic Dagga Orgy

SDO reminded me a lot about Tenacious D, and hearing their set felt like listening to ‘Wonderboy’ and ‘Tribute’ for the first time. Lekker chill funny beats! After the show I had a quick chat with Pete and congratulated him on a great (sweaty) performance.

Curious about the band, and what message they give out in their songs? Follow this link to listen to their EP – The Iron Prawn; we can say without a doubt that the music will give you a good laugh, and sommer let your mates also listen to it. They’ll dig it, trust us!

Seeing the full line up in SDO perform is definitely another box I have to tick off in my musical quest!
