Jonathan Peyper is undoubtedly one of the greatest up-and-coming guitarists and musicians in the South African Rock and Blues community. Peyper has produced a groundbreaking album which evokes a flood of emotions. With the support of Chris van der Walt and Jason Hinch as one of the most exciting rhythm sections in the country (The Black Cat Bones, Stefan Dixon, Albert Frost), Jonathan Peyper has created nothing short of a well-rounded blues-rock masterpiece. We caught up with them before their Mieliepop 2017 show in March. Hi there. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us. How would you describe a Jonathan Peyper performance? Hey guys! It’s an explosive show with 3 of SA’s top musicians. A perfect blend between modern rock and the blues. The show can take you from the most energetic high to a deep and groovy low. Does it ever get competitive between artists out there? It does get competitive at times, but it’s mostly in a positive vibe. This causes artists to push themselves musically, and their game-plan too. Most of the times artists in SA are only competing against themselves. Other bands, organizers, sound crews, club owners, etc., have always been really helpful. Great to hear! Are you doing anything special for Mieliepop Festival? We are almost finished with our new album. So we’ll definitely be performing some of the new material and showcasing it to the Mieliepop fanbase. We tried to get sheep with lasers attached, but the Fire Marshall denied it. 😉 Jinne! Hahaha! Who has been your biggest inspiration locally and international? Locally Dan Patlansky and Albert Frost have really inspired us. Internationally it’s guys like Gary Clark Jr., Joe Bonamassa, Philip Sayce, John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan etc. What is the best way to cool off at Mieliepop? Drinking a drink, chilling in the pool or the river, listening to cool bands… Best way is to keep your cool, then you’ll never have to cool off. Nice! Thanks for chatting to us. We’ll see you at Mieliepop! If you don’t have tickets yet, be sure to get your hands on them. NOW!
