Oppikoppi is going down in August, and it’s going to be a great party just outside the dusty town of Northam! Are you prepared? Have you double checked your tent? Did you buy 58 503 tent pegs (all of them will be lost) and do you have your tickets yet? If not, click here. With that said, we’re asking Oppikoppi artists 7 lekker questions about the festival, and even asking for a few hints and tips for first-timers. First up, The Mitten Fits. The Mitten Fits are a rootsy 2 piece acoustic band that trade in gritty songs with male and female harmonies. Formed as a one-off for a fundraiser, their bond as a musical unit led them to continue writing and performing, incorporating a diversity of unique covers with a strong original set. The Mitten Fits have found themselves in stellar company. Currently, they have played with alt. Country rockers Crystal Park, indie scenesters Shortstraw, acoustic dynamo’s Owl & Simone, the powerhouse One Night Stands, Idols runner-up, Mark Haze, just to name a few 🙂 “We love spending time with people of note and so we try incorporate all kinds of wonder and power that is out there in the world to include this inspirational sound that is The Mitten Fits. Our objective is to bring music back to its natural state, to challenge the normal and the mundane in order to find a new voice in song delivery. Choosing rawness over pretension, the Mitten Fits are about having a good time with their music. They believe in the magic of song. Welcome aboard! Let’s hope you’re fighting fit.” Do you have any advice for people who are attending the festival for the first time? Moenie ‘n sissie wees nie. Oppikoppi is easier if you just give into the pure madness. Have fun and don’t sweat the small things. You’re there to watch every band you love, drink with every friend you have and maybe score … #oppigoals Which band would you most like to have a few beers with at Oppikoppi this year, and why? I honestly can’t just settle on one band… bands are like beers, so a few bands and a few beers. But a toot with Laurie Levine and Josie Field at the Top Bar would be lekker! Those gals can paaardy! If the gals are reading this … I feel like it’s tradition. If you could describe Mordor/District 9 in one word, what would it be? Wildlings Any words for the people who complain about the line-up each and every year? Just be Ayoba! Complaining about the line-up is like complaining about the weather in Cape Town. As jy nie die band op stage like nie check ‘n narre stage. There’s way too much going on at Oppikoppi to have a kradenza about an act you don’t like. Dammit man… Albert Frost is everywhere all at the same time like Oprah … so there’s your cherry on top. Be open to new music … with new tjoons comes ndrinkinging buddies and new jols. Out of all the years you’ve been to Oppikoppi, which one was your favourite? And why? My favourite Oppikoppi was 2013 – the year I took a huge lunch tin with Strawberries that I soaked in vodka for a month before. Yus, those little berries were a hoot! I managed to convince our whole camp to have some and sheeeet got outta hand. Ramblings of love life and music around the camp fire at night sprinkled with missions around Mordor #bliss. Listening to who watched who and who just shredded a guitar was on the menu for that weekend. Beer or hard liquor if you’re at Oppikoppi? Both (Lank Beerz and Jose Cuervo offkoss!) If you could have one superpower for Oppikoppi, what would it be and why? Juss … I would want Professor X’s aka Charles Xavier’s power (from X-men) so I can be able to know where the hell all my mutants are at all times. We would like to thank Jolene and The Mitten Fits for his time. Be sure to check them out when they make their Oppikoppi debut!
