Oppikoppi is almost here, and it’s going to be a moerse #jol!. Are you prepared? Gaan jy bietjie tan in die bosveld? And do you have your tickets yet? If not, click here. With that said, we’re asking Oppikoppi artists 7 kief questions about the festival and even asking for a few hints and tips for first-timers. We had a chat with I AM!

I AM is an Alternative – Pop band from Pretoria consisting of four individuals that have come together to create the music that appeals to people with various musical taste.

Who is the best Oppikoppi-wingman you’ve ever had? And why was he/she so good?

Best wingman ever? This one would definitely go to the random friend KT made, which until recently he had only referred to him as “Suiker”. He has this elaborate and intricate explanation of why and how they gave him this name. He can’t recall if they even shared any mutual friends within his camp site but that definitely goes to show that Oppikoppi brings the best people together.

What has been your fondest memory of Oppikoppi?

The fondest memory has to be the first time we played Oppikoppi (The Fantastic Mr Vos Vos), not just because of the show but in every band’s career (in South Africa) Oppikoppi is a milestone or a bucket list item and for us, it was both. Cliché and a bit generic answer I know but fuck it was incredible.

What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever given you before or after a show?

We’ll keep it PG (laughs) but to be honest we’ve never experienced something thats way out there, So if we have to list them, then these are the most bizarre :

Pierre- Was catcalled by a girl screaming “FUCK ME !”
Juan- Received a drink (brandy) that looked like a coke float and smelled like a garbage truck.
Kelly- A marriage proposal

Which band would you most like to have a few beers with at Oppikoppi this year, and why?

Desmond and the Tutu’s, although we’re both bands from Pretoria. We’ve never crossed paths with the whole band. We had the pleasure of working with Nic while he was in the country but have never had the chance to have a chat with the rest of the band. If the rest of the band is anything like Nic I’m sure we’ll be in for a genuinely good time.

If you had no choice but to participate in the naked mile this year, what would your fool-proof plan consist of for winning the event?

Best thing to do (I think) would be to just embrace the moment knowing how I clumsy I can be, I wouldn’t even attempt to win it. Can only imagine falling while nude isn’t the best fun.

Where is the best place at Oppikoppi to wind down, or have a few beers with the mates?

The Top Bar for sure. It has a nice view of all the chaos that’s going down. And then there is a sweet spot next to the James Phillips stage if you want to embrace the madness but with some shade.

If you could describe Oppikoppi in one song excerpt, what would it be?

Taylor Swift – I Knew you were trouble – “Now I’m lying on the cold hard ground”

We would like to thank I AM for their time. Be sure to check them out when they gooi at Oppikopp!
