South Africa’s most celebrated music festival is going down in August, and it’s going to be goodie! We here at Why Ed are already preparing ourselves by making dust angels in random parking lots and not showering for a week. With that said, we’re asking Oppikoppi artists 7 questions about the festival, and sommer delving into past experiences. Their answers may serve you well in the quest to make your very own Oppikoppi experience one of the most memorable.

We took some time out of our festival preparations to ask Garth a few questions.

What has been your fondest memory of Oppikoppi?

I remember winning the battle of the bands there waaaaay back in 2000 when I was still playing for Tweak. That prize money gave us the money we needed to record our first demo. So the Koppi ties are strong and they go waaaay waaaay back!

How do you prepare for a festival like Oppikoppi?

Most of the preparation is mental. Koppi is not for sissies. It doesn’t matter what physical comforts you bring with you, if your head is not right, you will go mad and find yourself passed out naked behind the portaloos on Monday morning with no Idea what happened!

How would you guys deal with the Oppikoppi pre-show jitters? And is it different to other festivals or performances?

To be honest, we’ve been in the game too long to get jitters…we get excited, hell yeah! But we’re not nervous. The crowds at Koppi are always such a vibe and there is always such a positive energy that we just can’t wait to get out there on stage and party with them for an hour.

What’s the one thing you will never forget to bring to Oppikoppi, other than instruments?

Hahaha! Sun cream! Me and the sun are not pals…I am basically a vampire and would turn to dust without sun cream. Factor 50 at least.

Do you have any advice for people who are attending the festival for the first time?

Yeah, don’t forget your sun cream! Jokes. Advice would be: Go with an open mind. Koppi is rough and ready, but if you go expecting to get a little dusty and being 100% ok with that, you are gonna have the time of your life!

Who is the best Oppikoppi-wingman you’ve ever had? And why was he/she so good?

Hahaha! Ja, a buddy system is a good idea at Koppi! My boet is a great option as he has his head screwed on pretty firmly. I’m pretty sure he would talk me out of trying to do a backflip off the stage if I found myself a little sauced on a Friday night.

Out of all the years you’ve been to Oppikoppi, which one was your favorite? And why?

I think 2015 (I think it was) was a cracker for us! We played a few slots before Sum 41 who were like our heroes back in the day, so to share a stage with them was very special.

We would like to thank Garth for his time! Be sure to check out CrashCarBurn when they take the stage at Oppikoppi.
