Oppikoppi is going down this weekend, and it’s going to be a great #jol a few hours from Snor City. Are you prepared? Do you have a camping chair and a cooler? And do you have your tickets yet? If not, click here. With that said, we’re asking Oppikoppi artists 7 kief questions about the festival  and even asking for a few hints and tips for first-timers. We had a chat with New Academics.

The genre-defying New Academics are a Johannesburg-based South African band, who have dished out their twisted brand of groove-oriented rock from almost every single club and festival stage in the country since their inception in 2004.

Where’s the better party; Kreef Hotel, or District 9? Explain.

One year in District 9 I camped next to two guys in khaki who played hard house round the clock from their double cab and had two chickens in a coop, Oppi and Koppi. Then they butchered and ate them on the final day. I don’t know if that counts as a party, but you sure as fuck aren’t going to see anything like that in Kreef.

Any pre-show rituals you have before a show?

I just get really fidgety and have difficulty maintaining eye contact or focus. Nothing cool.

What’s the one thing you will never forget to bring to Oppikoppi, other than instruments?

Painkillers of some sort. This year I think I have some Tramecet so there will be no consequences.

Which band would you most like to have a few beers with at Oppikoppi this year, and why?

There are plenty, the top bar usually serves up an eclectic mix of rad individuals after midnight. It’s nice to see some of the Cape Town bands who you don’t see up north too often. It’s always good to bump into Albert Frost.

Lekker! What’s the most random question you’ve ever been asked at Oppikoppi?

‘Why is your burger?’ I think there was supposed to be more, or a different interrogative but that’s where it actually ended.

Too much LOL. Any words for the people who complain about the line-up each and every year?

Economics, bitches!

What can people expect from New Academics this year at Oppikoppi?

Some new choons, some old choons, all at a slightly faster tempo and more chaotic than the albums because we will be nervous. Personally, I will sweat profusely, it happens when i concentrate regardless of temperature which may be indicative of a greater health issue because I’m not getting any younger but I’m choosing to ignore that until such time as it makes human interaction awkward.

We would like to thank New Academics for their time. Be sure to check them out when they kick Oppikoppi-ass!
