Oppikoppi is coming for you, and it’s going to be one moerse jol in the bushveld. Have you prepped your liver and feet yet? Have you memorized the line-up yet? And do you have your tickets yet? If not, click here. With that said, we’re asking Oppikoppi artists 7 questions about the festival and a few other random questions that you would like to know. We had a chat with the amazing Jonathan Peyper. We are the Jonathan Peyper Trio. A blues-rock trio from Pretoria, South Africa. On bass and drums we have Chris van der Walt and Jason Hinch. Two renowned local musicians best known as the drummer and bassist for The Black Cat Bones, Albert Frost, Blood Brothers, Gerald Clark and many, many more. A rhythm section of doom that has melted faces on the 1000’s of stages they have appeared on together over the last 10 years. Together they have been nominated for a SAMA (for Best Rock Album) as well as winning a people’s choice MK award for South Africa’s Best Live Act. It really just doesn’t get any better than this. Do you have any advice for people who are attending the festival for the first time? Take lots of underwear, paper towels, a flashlight and painkillers and make sure you stay warm at night. What have you done so far to prepare for Oppikoppi? We have been working on the new album and so working on some fresh material and a whole new “in your face” blues rock vibe to ensure we amaze our crowd at Koppi this year. Which band would you most like to have a few beers with at Oppikoppi this year, and why? August Burns Red. I would like to pick their brains and learn more about their style of music and find out more about the music scene in the US. How would you describe a typical Jonathan Peyper performance? A type of in your face power blues rock trio, almost Rage Against the Machine vibe backed by powerful dirty bass riffs and punching drum fills. What’s the most random question you’ve ever been asked at Oppikoppi? Someone asked me once if I’m Brendan Peyper’s brother. What’s the first three things you’re going to do when you arrive at Oppikoppi? Get an ice cold one, get warmed up for our show and enjoy the rest of the awesome bands performing there. Which of the artists performing this year are you looking forward seeing for the first time? August Burns Red and YelaWolf. They are from the US and its always good for SA musicians to be exposed to International acts, giving them something to work towards and constantly pushing their abilities. So I would like to see and learn from them. We would like to thank the Jonathan Peyper Trio for their time. Be sure to check them out when they tear Oppikoppi a new one in August. Lekker!
