After a wonderful celebration of Youth Day in 2016, Liefde by die Dam is back in August 2017 to celebrate South African music at Jozi’s spectacular Emmarentia Dam. This full-day family event welcomes music lovers of all ages. Named after Valiant Swart’s chart-topping hit of the same name, Liefde by die Dam is a showcase for the best in local talent. Join the groundbreaking group Die Heuwels Fantasties, revered for their unique music and their energetic live performances. Joining Die Heuwels on the mainstage is iconic front man of legendary South African rock bands Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel, Francois van Coke. Whilst lazing under the leafy trees of Emmarentia, the beloved Afrikaans voice of Laurika Rauch will serenade you, followed by Afrikaans darling Riana Nel. Crowd favourite SAMA nominee Majozi returns this year with his foot stomping, electro indie rock and adding to this stellar line-up is the inspirational Tresor, and South Africa’s own rap superstar, JR. To round off this unbelievable day of entertainment are newcomer Jo Black, whose debut album already reached gold status this year, and guitar virtuoso Loki Rothman. For your day out at the dam there will be a delicious range of South Africa’s best artisan food traders. You can also bring your own picnic and spread your blanket out for the perfect celebration of youth and music. With that said, we had a chat with Tresor! Hi there. Thanks for chatting with us. How are you feeling about performing at Liefde by die Dam? Hi, guys. I am really excited to share my music and perform with my full band ‘The Legends 80″ !I know its gonna be rad party and awesome musical experience! Awesome! To people who haven’t heard you perform, what can they expect from you on the day? They can expect the highest vibration of African music like never experienced before! Come ready to sweat and lose yourself to dance. Sounds like a jol. Of all the artists performing on the day, who are you keen on seeing? Die Heuwels Fantasties, Majozi, Jo Black, and Riana Nel… also really keen to discover new music and new acts. What has been your absolute highlight on your musical journey? There are so many Highlights… but I’d say winning 2016 Best Pop album of the year at the SAMA’s. The Award was handed over to me by SA minister of Arts and Culture at ICC in Durban, which is not far from where I used to work as a car guard not too long ago. That was a full circle that felt like a miracle and unreal! Jinne! That is insane. Well done! How do you know “you made it” in music? Or is a continuous journey to “make it”? I haven’t made it yet in my eyes… I am still right at the beginning of my career… it’s a continuous journey and I have to keep pushing myself day and night to reach the heights of Michael Jackson, U2, Coldplay, Phil Collins… until we influence the global pop culture with our sound, we’ll keep going. That’s so great to hear. What makes you excited about the local music scene? I am excited about the local music scene because local artists are making music for the world and not just SA anymore and I believe it’s about time we have major global artists moulded and based in Africa. Who has been your biggest influence in your career? My music is quite eclectic so I have a few major influences… mainly Micheal Jackson, Coldplay, Fela Kuti, Papa Wemba, Johnny Clegg, Youssou Ndour… just to name a few. Take us through your songwriting process. How hard is it to come up with something new and fresh when writing lyrics? I write most of the time on guitar and start with melodies because that’s my strength and since English is my fourth language, I take my time with lyrics… I find writing songs very fascinating and I have really learned to stretch myself to be able to come up with new and fresh songs in a short period of time in different languages; then develop them and let them mature while I produced them and build their identity before the official release. Nice, man. Where can people find you next and get in touch with you?
