Hailing out of the Sundance Film Festival, A24’s Hereditary is being buzzed as the scariest horror film in years. Our own Fred Topel loved the film, calling it “psychologically and viscerally grueling.” With the hype going full steam, and people already calling for Toni Collette to get an Oscar nomination next year, A24 will release the fright fest in theaters on June 8, 2018. Keeping the buzz turned to ten, they’ve already released a bloodcurdling trailer for Ari Aster‘s chiller that begins after their reclusive grandmother passes away, the Graham family tries to escape the dark fate they’ve inherited. There are a plethora of quotes promising everything from it being a “modern day horror masterpiece” to being “this generation’s The Exorcist.” The footage goes right for the jugular, putting all sorts of horrors on display without spoiler a thing. Full synopsis: “When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.” Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, and Milly Shapiro also star.
