There was a time when Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct his own take on Creature from the Black Lagoon, but that, of course, didn’t come to fruition. Nevertheless, it’s clearly a movie that the visionary filmmaker loves, and it seems to have been a direct inspiration for his new film The Shape of Water.

The other-worldly tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963, debuted its first footage ahead of select showings of War for the Planet of the Apes, and that trailer just hit the net. It presents a fairy tale love story between woman and creature, and it looks to embody everything that we love about Guillermo del Toro.

In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.

Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones also star.

Look for it on December 8, 2017.
