Afro/indie rock band Ben Dey and the Concrete Lions has released their debut EP RISE on the 29th September.

The seven-track EP marks the group’s biggest commercial release and follows the success of its single Easy Love, which topped the 5FM rock chart in 2016. Recorded at Popsicle Studios in Woodstock, Cape Town, the EP showcases the group’s most popular songs, including End of the Line, One Day and Up In Flames.

“In the last year, the band has concentrated on its live set. Performances at Rocking the Daisies, Oppikoppi, Park Life, Bushfire Festival and Up The Creek has evolved our songs and the band finally feels ready to release an accurate narrative of these experiences,” says Ben Dey, the group’s vocalist.

Made up of Ben Dey (lead vocals), Ongama Mona (lead guitar), Alex Birns (drums) and Dillon Birns (bass), the foursome share the same ambition, ideology and commitment which has been crucial from the get-go.

With that said, we had a quick chat with Ben.

Hi guys. Thanks for having a chat with us. How has the reception been on your debut EP?

Thanks for the interview. We have had a great response.

What makes “Rise” special for you?

Rise is our 1st collective release of songs. I think it’s a good halfway mark to an album.

How was the recording process behind “Rise” as it was your biggest commercial release?

We recorded the project at Popsicle Studios in Woodstock, Cape Town. The process took longer than expected but in the end, it worked out.

Which tracks from “Rise” are you keen on performing live to the fans?

We perform all the tracks from the EP in our live set.

Awesome! How would you describe the South African music industry at the moment?

It’s a fish pond. Good for artists to grow in. There is an ocean out there.

You’ve performed at various festivals and events, which stands out for you the most?

Rocking the Daisies 2016 and Bushfire Festival 2017.

What defines success for you as an artist in South Africa?

Success as an artist is an abstract condition.

What is next for you guys?

Who knows. Hopefully good shows and lucky encounters.
